GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
The Community Solid Waste Worker provides high-quality service and management of the solid waste collection, disposal and integrated recycling programs for the community and administrative staff of Doig River First Nation. The Community Solid Waste Worker will need to encompass the ability to work as part of the Housing and Public Works teams as well as the initiative to independently manage their work capacity.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBLIITES
Residential Garbage Collection
Collects all garbage from residential homes on weekly basis and transports to the community bins at the landfill; exceptions may arise from time to time
Reports any concerns about residential bins to the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor
Documents and reports any misuse of the residential bins
Administrative Garbage Collection
Responsible for ensuring garbage is collected from the band administration office daily and taken to the collection bins
Landfill Management
Contacts waste management company when the bins need to be emptied or replaced
Ensures that the landfill is kept clean and free of garbage outside of the bins
Opens and locks the landfill gates consistent with established schedule
Documents and reports any misuse of the community landfill bins and/or landfill site
Communications
Ensures any concerns around disposal and collection are properly and adequately communicated to supervisor(s)
Ensures that all communication with tenants, administration staff, and external agencies is done in a professional manner
Maintains a communication file from tenants and administration staff and ensures that requests/inquiries are completed including follow up
Recycling
Assists with developing and implementing a recycling program and protocol for DRFN
Collects, separates, and disposes of all recycling materials once a week, in accordance with established program guidelines
Other
Ensures maintenance, including preventative maintenance of all solid waste collection assets are performed as per the MMP
Assists with any reporting requirements including but not limited to; funding agencies or requests from DRFN Management
Attends and participates in meetings as required, including but not limited to; community consultation and municipal working relationship meetings
Assists with the organization and execution of annual community clean ups
Ensure appropriate PPE is worn for the collection activity being performed
Ensure that all waste management activities align with any environmental legislation, DRFN Land Code and By-laws, and Health and Safety Protocols for the staff and community residents
Identify, mitigate, and report any potential hazards to the community environment and/or residents
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience, Skills, and Abilities
Related experience an asset
Able to maintain proper personal care to safely meet the physical demands of the position
Must be positive, proactive, strong team participant with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
Strong critical thinking/problem solving aptitude.
High standard of care for the community and its residents.
Demonstrated excellent team and client communication skills
Strong sense of ethics and the ability to handle sensitive information with tact and discretion.
Resourceful, with the ability to prioritize, multitask and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
Basic understanding of chemicals and their potential reaction to the environment
Education
Grade 12 or equivalent preferred
WHMIS
Knowledge
Knowledge of DRFN and Indigenous culture.
Knowledge of Municipal Service Agreements and their relationship within on-reserve communities
Knowledge of provincial recycling programs
Requirements
Valid Driver’s License
Personal Truck, with appropriate insurance
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Community Solid Waste Worker is a contract salary based position, situated within the community of Doig River First Nation, and the incumbent must be available to travel to and from the office daily.
