Job Title Guardian
Department Lands & Resources
Location Doig River First Nation (DRFN)
Reports To Lands & Resources Manager
The Doig River First Nation Guardians will assert our Treaty Rights and reclaim our role as caretakers and
stewards of the land, water, wildlife, and cultural values within the Doig River traditional territory. The
Guardian will be a conduit to connect the youth with Elders, honouring cultural traditions and provide
mentorship and training to DRFN’s young people to prepare them as the next generation of educators
and leaders.
The Guardians will engage with other land users, industry representatives, and government to improve
land stewardship and elevate and enforce cultural protocols and traditional law. By gathering and
recording data on the land, they assist with strengthening decision-making and planning.
The Guardians maintain a presence throughout the territory while out on patrol; monitor the impacts
of resource use; report and/or enforce violations to our cultural protocols, as well as provincial and
federal regulations; accurately collect monitoring data; and report their activities to the Doig River
Lands Office. Their work supports all the Doig River First Nation Lands programs including Land Use
Planning, Water, Wildlife & Land Management, referrals, Treaty Rights and cultural heritage protection.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
General
1. Maintain a presence throughout the territory on behalf of the Doig River First Nation
• Conduct monitoring patrols throughout territory (including occasional multi-day trips).
2. Monitor values and collect data.
3. Support lands department initiatives.
4. Respond to reports of concern.
5. Elder and member care related to the practice of culture and land stewardship-collection and
provision of firewood, meat, cultural outings, etc.
6. Build relationships with provincial and federal enforcement agency staff.
Communication, Engagement and Education
• Drafts field activity reports for the Guardian coordinator, the Lands Manager, Chief and Council
and membership as required.
• Compiles photos and summaries of guardian work completed for outreach purposes.
• Engage members by facilitating knowledge sharing, engaging in discussions, and taking them on
field trips and assessments.
• Provides opportunities for members and staff to learn about resource development and
assessment methodologies, operations, and practices.
• Respond professionally to violations in an appropriate manner by approaching resource users
and documenting relevant information.
• Respond to community reports regarding illegal or suspicious activities in the Doig River
territory.
• Build and maintain productive relationships with federal and provincial agency staff.
• Conduct joint patrols with relevant enforcement agencies where appropriate.
• Educate community members about Doig River Nation Indigenous Guardian Vision, goals and
activities.
• Support Doig River Lands Office communications by participating in open houses, submitting
articles for community newsletter and contributing content to DRFN social media.
• Work with schools to raise awareness with the youth about the Indigenous Guardian program
and activities. Serve as a role model for youth interns and summer students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge & Experience
• Proficiency in Microsoft office software including Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and PowerPoint
• Familiarity or willingness to learn Open Source and/or ArcGIS platforms, and associated field
data capture software.
• Knowledge of DRFN history and culture.
• Familiarity with the traditional territory and DRFN’s values.
• Spent extensive time working or recreating outdoors.
Skills and Abilities
• Strong knowledge of DRFN territory
• Knowledge of local terrestrial and aquatic species.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, and comfortable interacting with visitors and
resource users in a constructive manner
• Strong commitment to protecting the health of DRFN territory and culture
• Proficient computer skills, including email and using handheld devices
• Strong communication skills and be able to interact with proponents/contractors in a polite and
positive manner
• Dependable, motivated and demonstrates a strong work ethic
• Demonstrates a strong commitment to the DRFN Indigenous Guardian program vision
• Ability to work irregular work hours, including some overtime
• Comfortable outdoors
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and multi-task.
• Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work effectively as a team member
• Demonstrated ability to exercise judgement and discretion when handling confidential
information.
Other Requirements
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
• Reliable personal vehicle (insured for work use and in good working condition)
• Integrates Beaver culture and language into Lands Department related communications as
feasible.
• Follows all DRFN Human Resources, Information Management and Finance policies and
procedures.
• Seeks continual improvement to ensure the duties associated with this position are conducted
effectively, efficiently, and professionally.
• Criminal record check (if working with youth)

o Level 1 Occupational First Aid
o H2S Alive
o WHMIS
o Bear Awareness
o Swift Water Rescue
o Firearms Acquisition License (PAL)
o Wilderness Safety and Survival First Aid
