Creating Balance: The Path Forward

K’ih Tsaa?dze Tribal Park has been significantly impacted by the cumulative effects of industrial development. K’ih Tsaa?dze Tribal Park is located within a broader industrialized landscape with few designated parks or protected areas, making the conservation of this area critically important for maintenance of the boreal ecosystems in northeast BC and northwest Alberta. In March 2022, the Province of BC and six Treaty 8 First Nations signed a Consensus Document which gave the Province of BC a mandate to reach agreement with each of the First Nations on specific commitments, obligations and solutions to land use management. The purpose is to work on land planning and cumulative effects management to address the 2021 Yahey v British Columbia BC Supreme Court decision.

The Consensus Document includes commitments to protect specific lands, which includes K’ih Tsaa?dze Tribal Park. Doig River First Nation is currently working with the Province of BC to fulfill these commitments and realize the community’s vision for K’ih Tsaa?dze Tribal Park.
