Build Stronger Health Services.

Strengthen Community Wellness.

Lead a newly established health leadership function where your experience can help shape programs, systems, and services for the Doig River First Nation community.

Doig River First Nation is strengthening its Health & Wellness Department to build a strong foundation for responsive, community-based health services. The department delivers programs spanning Home & Community Care, Chronic Disease Prevention and Management, Addiction and Mental Wellness, and Adult In-Home Support Services, with a focus on culturally safe, respectful care grounded in Dane-zaa values.

Doig River First Nation is seeking a Health Director to provide leadership across its Health & Wellness programs and staff while helping shape the department’s systems, programs, policies, and operational foundations for long-term success. Reporting to the Band Manager, this is a hands-on, community-facing role that brings together strategic oversight, program development, team leadership, financial management, and relationship-building.

The Health Director will work closely with community members, caregivers, Chief & Council, internal departments, and external partners to strengthen health services and ensure they are responsive to evolving community needs. The role offers an opportunity to contribute at both the departmental and community level, while supporting care that is culturally safe, respectful, and community-centred. The position is primarily office- and community-based and requires flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Why This Role Stands Out?

  • Build the Department: Step into a newly established leadership position with the opportunity to help develop the systems, programs, policies, and operational foundations that will support the Health & Wellness Department for years to come.
  • Lead Across a Diverse Health Portfolio: Provide oversight across Home & Community Care, chronic disease prevention and management, addiction and mental wellness, and adult in-home support services.
  • Bring Two Worldviews Into Practice: Apply a two-eyed seeing approach, balancing Western and Traditional Indigenous worldviews while advancing culturally safe and trauma-informed health services.
  • Be a Voice for Community Health: Represent and advocate for Health & Wellness programs with Chief & Council, the Band Manager, other Nation departments, and external partners, including FNHA, Northern Health, and ISC.
  • Shape Services Around Community Needs: Identify service gaps, guide program development and innovation, and promote health education and community wellness initiatives in response to evolving community priorities.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Public Health, Health Promotion, or a related health field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Leadership Experience: Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience, including staff supervision and budget management.
  • First Nations Experience: Experience working with First Nations communities, with strong cultural awareness and respect for Dane-zaa traditions and values.
  • Indigenous Health Systems: Knowledge of First Nations health systems, including FNHA and Indigenous Services Canada programs.
  • Requirements: Current regulatory registration where applicable, First Aid and BLS certification, a valid Class 5 driver’s licence with acceptable abstract, and a Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Compensation:

  • The position offers an annual salary of $135,000–$150,000.
  • The position includes travel reimbursement at $0.70 per kilometre, with a personal vehicle required for the role.
